MEC Mashatile launches the Boiketlong Mega Housing Project to end prolonged protest

[09-05-2016] AFTER 20 years of waiting and a decade of mass protest action, the residents of Boiketlong finally have hope of a better life and a reason to smile! One of the biggest townships in Sebokeng will have over 12 thousand houses built in the area. Gauteng MEC for Cooperative Governance, Traditional Affairs and Human Settlements (CoGTA), Paul Mashatile made this announcement to the residents during a special visit to the area on Friday.

MEC Mashatile’s visit to the area ended a prolonged service delivery protest by Boiketlong residents who were demanding houses, electricity and increased access to water. Residents and community leaders had been on a three-week long protest which barricaded one of the busiest roads in the Emfuleni Local Municipality, Waterdal Road, which connects Sebokeng to Vereeniging and other industrial hubs.

New Emfuleni Municipal Manager hits the ground running!

Yunus Chamda[04-05-2016] Veteran local government administrator and former political activist, Yunus Chamda has commenced his new role as the Municipal Manager of the Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM). The newly-seconded Municipal Manager said he was impressed at the amount of talent and dedication in the municipality’s employ after observing from the sidelines.

“Discussions about my redeployment to the ELM began as soon as the Executive Mayor, Councillor Mahole Mofokeng, was announced as the new ELM Mayor some six months ago. Ever since then, I have been observing the way people at this municipality work and I have been amazed at the talent and dedication I have seen,” the Municipal Manager told senior ELM staff at the his first meeting held at the Mayoral Parlour on Tuesday, 3 May – his first official day at work.
