WHEN Lucia Jakeni entered Idols SA, nobody knew she would make it to the singing competition’s Top Five.
After weeks of voting, the 26-year old songstress from Evaton was finally eliminated from the show two weeks ago.
But the coarse-voiced singer has earned herself scores of supporters in the whole country following several live shows where she displayed her talent, much to the joy of her family members.
So, it was no surprise that when Lucia arrived back at her hometown, there was overwhelming joy and tons of messages from her fans.
The gifted singer has set social media ablaze with hundreds new supporters who are now following her every move.
To showcase his support for Lucia, Emfuleni Local Municipality Executive Mayor Councillor Mahole Mofokeng hosted the songstress to a special dinner last Tuesday.
The homecoming dinner was held at the Riverside Sun Hotel in Vanderbijlpark and was attended by Emfuleni Local Municipality’s Member of the Mayoral Committed for Arts and Culture Councillor Edwin Kele, his counterpart at Sedibeng District Municipality, Councillor Yusuf Mahommed and representatives from local and mainstream media.
Speaking at the dinner, Mayor Mofokeng said the entire community of Emfuleni was proud of Lucia.
“We will always support Lucia with her musical journey and we thank her for showing the entire country the amazing talent our region can produce,” he said.
Lucia said she was proud to be the first lady from the Vaal to have represented her town all the way up until the singing competition’s top five.
“Idols SA has given me the platform to show what I can do with my talent, I am planning to continue what I have started and continue taking my music to new heights,” she said.
Lucia made it through to the Idols SA Theatre Week after she earned an impressive four yeses from the judges in her audition. She was overjoyed after earning the Golden Ticket and in an interview with several media houses at the time, promised to go all the way, a promise she kept.
This was Lucia’s second stint at Idols, after falling at the second hurdle, at the Theatre Week held at Sun City in 2013. As the time the judges said she was not ready and she accepted her fate and went back home to polish her singing. She went back home to pick herself up and came back a stronger and wiser singer in the 2016 edition of the singing contest.
Before Idols, Lucia has been in Coca Cola Pop Stars and more recently, Clash of the Choirs where she was one of the vocalists for team Shugasmakx (Lebo Mothibe) in 2014.
