Electricity restored in Peace Haven

23 Aug. 2018, Vanderbijlpark - Power supply was successfully restored to all of the affected streets in Peace Heaven yesterday.

This is after the residents of Jimmy Ball St., Charles Swart Ave, Jansen Ave, Brand Van Zyl Ave, Frank Haskins Rd. and General Hertzog Rd. were left in the dark for eleven (11) grueling days following a substation that caught fire on Thursday, two weeks ago.

At this moment, it is still unclear what the cause of fire was, however, investigations are still underway by both the Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) Electricity Department and the insurance company.

Speaking to M. Selelo, a Senior Technician in the Electricity Department, she indicated that, in as much as it was paramount for the department to conclude the investigations on the cause of fire, it was equally paramount to fully restore power supply to all of the affected consumers as a matter of urgency.

“A new mini substation which will be used as a means to temporarily restore power supply to all of the affected streets was successfully installed on Tuesday the 21st August 2018. The mini substation and installation comes at a cost of one (1) million Rands to the mucipality”, Selelo said.

Selelo further added that given the extent of damages on the burned down substation, repairing it is not a viable option since it has been totally destroyed. The substation will have to be rebuilt as a permanent solution to the future power supply setbacks in Peace Heaven.

ELM is currently facing tough challenges of nonpayment of consumer bills, loss of skilled staff, cable theft and illegal connections. Notwithstanding all of these challenges, the municipality still strives to preserve and improve the integrity of the electricity infrastructure and service provision to its consumers. Strategic plans are in place to restore the electricity service infrastructure to its pinnacle.

The municipality urges all consumers to assist in this process by paying consumer bills, using the electricity sparingly, curbing the vandalism of electricity and other municipal infrastructure, mainly during service delivery protests.Burned down substation and the new mini-station
