Discontinuation of cheque payments for all municipal services fees, surchages levies and taxes
Due to various administrative and other fraudulent activities regarding payments, the Emfuleni Local Municipality took a decision not to accept cheque payments in lieu of these activities.
There are syndicates that have been paying the Municipality with fraudulent cheques that have been dishonoured by the banks.
These syndicates promise members of the public that they will clear their accounts if they are paid a certain amount. The syndicate person will come and deposit the cheque and print the statement indicating the account having been cleared. The account remains uncleared until the bank rejects the cheque and the Municipality is then forced to reverse the payment which results in the customer’s account to be in arrears.
All cheque boxes will be closed and no cheque deposits will be accepted as a payment. All third party outlets (Easy pay) as well as the main commercial banks were informed not to accept any cheque payments.
Although cheques are not accepted anymore, customers can make use of the following to settle municipal services fees, surcharges, levies and taxes:
- Paying by debit order
- Bank deposits
- Payment at municipal office/pay points
- Payment at easy pay outlets
- Internet transfers
The Municipality wants to apologize to members of the public for any inconvenience that the stoppage of cheque payments might cause to them. The action was taken to protect the interests of our customers.
