The Excecutive Mayor of Emfuleni to embark on a dignitary packs roll out campaign at Emfuleni Schools
15 October 2013 - Subsequent to a national research which highlighted the fact that an estimated 30% of girls do not attend school during their menstrual period and a visit to Emfuleni Schools by the former MEC of Economic Development, MEC Qedani Mahlangu, which indicated that one of the biggest challenge that lead girl learners to bunking school in this area is the inability to afford sanitary towels.
This issue was further more scrutinized in the Emfuleni Youth Summit thus resulting in its adoption as a program of action by the office of the Executive Mayor. On average, about 4 days per month can be lost by a girl learner under these circumstances, which can add up to 48 days (absenteeism) of the 198 days of the actual public school days per annum.
It is against this background that the Executive Mayor of Emfuleni Local Municipality Cllr Greta Hlongwane, Members of the Mayoral Committee and the Speaker are taking to the streets once more to intervene and distribute Dignitary Packs to girl learners in Emfuleni Schools. Members of the media are invited to attend and give coverage to the events where the Executive Mayor, Members of the Mayoral Committee and the Speaker will be distributing these towels. The events will be held as follows:
