MEDIA STATEMENT: Emfuleni sends condolences to family of late Arts activist, Nyembezi Kunene
06 June 2016 - The Emfuleni Local Municipality joins fellow South Africans and arts industry in mourning the passing of much-loved actor, director, playwright and producer, Evaton resident, Nyembezi ‘Tears’ Kunene.
The 57-year old entertainer, who passed away this weekend, is best known for his many roles in the film and TV sector, including popular shows such as Emzini Wezinsizwa; Mopheme, Phamokate, Gazlam, Generations, Isibaya, Ring of Lies, Umlilo, and The Contender, to name but a few.

Mr. Kunene was also a noted director, producer and playwright and worked with some of the best talent on South African television screens.
He also served as the deputy chairperson of Emfuleni Arts and Culture Forum where he continuously changed the lives of many people in the industry, especially young artists.
“We would like to convey our heartfelt condolences to the family of Baba Nyembezi Kunene during these trying times,” Emfuleni Executive Mayor, Cllr Mahole Simon Mofokeng, said.
“What many people did not know is that Baba Nyemza, as he was popularly known in Evaton and around the Vaal, was more than just an actor. He was a community builder, a soccer fanatic and a motivational speaker. Indeed, we have lost a legend,” the Executive Mayor said.
Mr. Kunene, who also ran a football club, Kunene Aces, and various community upliftment projects, leaves behind his mother, wife, four children and grandchildren.
