9 June 2016 - The brand new Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) Revenue Collection Call Centre will not just help the Municipality stabilize its financial position; it will also help to improve the living standard of our communities, boost job creation and skills transfer in the area.

The Call Centre will be launched by ELM Executive Mayor, Cllr. Mahole Simon Mofokeng.
The Call Centre will have two parts – one being the Inbound Customer Service Centre while the other will focus on Outbound Debt Collection.

The call centre will employ no less than 60 Emfuleni young people, with continuous Call Centre training provided onsite.
The Inbound Customer Service Centre will provide a link between the Municipality and its customers – the ratepayers. It will log and resolve queries and also provide facilities where ratepayers and customers can make safe payments.

Customers will be able to come in for assistance with either financial or non-financial matters. They will also be able to make acknowledgement of debt and finalise payment arrangement.

Critical skills such as communication, effective negotiation, conflict management and presentation will be imparted to all staff working in the Call Centre.

As one of the challenges facing the Municipality has been debt collection, the Call Centre will also be paying attention to the matter.

“The main purpose of the Debt Collection Centre is to ensure that outstanding debt is paid; new payers are activated, identification of non-payers with reasons, cleaning up the Debtors Book and the general improvement of revenue collection “said Executive Mayor Mofokeng.

Call centre agents will use a variety of methods to ensure collections, including through outbound calls, SMSes, letters and emails. The agents have also been trained to identify different debtor groups from indigents to pensioners and commercial.

“What pleases us about this initiative – which is central to our theme of Getting the Basics Right: Our Programme for Restoration – is that while helping strengthen the Municipality’s financial position; it is also helping develop the Call Centre sector in the area.

This is important as it means we are, during this Youth Month, empowering young people with skills that will help them become employable even beyond the timeframes of this project. This is indeed a good story, “concluded the Executive Mayor.
