Residents in the Boipatong and Sebokeng hostels handed sanitizers to combat spread of Covid-19. Gauteng MEC for Economic Development, Agriculture and Environment, Morakane Mosupyoe and Emfuleni Local Municipality Executive Mayor, Councillor Gift Moerane on Tuesday (14 April, 2020), rolled out a sanitization program in three hostels in the municipality.

MEC Mosupyoe and Mayor Moerane led hundreds of volunteers who teamed up into groups to distribute sanitizers to the Boipatong, Sebokeng and Kwa-Masiza Hostels.

Sanitization teams arrived at the hostels with tanks full of sanitizer loaded onto vehicles.

Each household was dispensed half a litre (500ml) of sanitizer to use to sanitize their hands regularly.

This forms part of the Gauteng Provincial Government’s intervention to fundamentally disrupt and combat the spread of Covid-19.
The focus of the rollout was on high density dwellings including hostels and informal settlements.

MEC Mosupyoe said handing out sanitizers was a practical solution to stop the spread of the pandemic that has overwhelmed the world.
“In support of the national program to curb the spread of Covid-19, we are giving people sanitizers in their homes where they live,” she said.
The MEC commended the community of Boipatong Hostel for keeping their hostel clean.

“One other thing I appreciate about this place is its cleanliness. The people here are really trying to keep their hostel clean,” the MEC praised Boipatong Hostel residents.

ELM MMC for Environmental Management and Planning, Councillor Nomvula Thulo and Sedibeng District Municipality MMC for Sports, Recreation, Arts, Culture, Heritage and Public Safety, Councillor Yusuf Mahommed were also present to help oversee the sanitization program, together with officials from the Gauteng Provincial Government.

ELM Councillors, ward committee members and ordinary residents also rallied behind the program, ensuring its success.
