Cemeteries

All funeral undertakers, bereaved families and mourners must comply.

The outbreak of Covid-19 has enforced changes in the manner municipalities, funeral undertakers and bereaved families conduct burials, and Emfuleni Local Municipality is no different.

To curb the spread of Coronavirus, our Parks and Cemeteries Department, in compliance with national regulations, has put in place the following regulations:

  • No funerals will be permitted into the cemetery without any attendance registers.
  • A maximum number of fifty (50) people at gate will be allowed into the cemetery.
  • All funerals must stick to the 1-hour approved period in the cemetery.
  • All offenders will be prosecuted as per approved municipal by-laws charge sheet.
  • Attendance registers must be filled-in full otherwise will not be accepted.
  • Residents are ordered to please stay home as no one will be allowed into cemeteries except for burial purposes (ordinary visits and grave site cleaning are prohibited).
  • Any other activities at graveyards must be suspended and people will be returned back and charged for failure to confine oneself to his/her place of residence, and a R 1000 fine as per Reg. 11 B(1)(i) administered.
  • No night vigils are allowed during funerals, and unveilings of tombstones will not be allowed during the lockdown period.

The municipality is still experiencing challenges in cemeteries, including lack of registers with funeral processions of more than 50 mourners arriving for burials, and no social distancing observed with some funerals spending more than the 1-hour stipulated period inside the graveyard. The municipality pleads with all stakeholders to comply with the regulations gazetted by national government during the lockdown period.
