Councillor Mahole Simon MofokengGood evening to you all.

It is with great honour to be invited to this grand ceremony of awarding those who through their hard work became top achievers in education for the Class of 2016. As a student myself, I know the relief of completing your studies with high notes.

For a learner, on a school level, to perform better, a support system has to be intact. This evening we experience the support system which the Education Department, teachers and guardians played in the success of these learners.

This ceremony has broaden to the extent of recognizing even the managers in the education sector in our area of Emfuleni. As the Emfuleni Local Municipality, we take pride to be in partnership which has developed for the 5 years with the Sedibeng West District. Although we have postponed our position of being the top on national level, I do believe that it is indeed a reasonable postponement.

Ladies and gentlemen, even the best of the best cannot be expected to win at all times. There are moments when you have to sit down and reflect while others who think they have permanently taken your title will be in for a surprise. By this, I mean that the year 2017 is a year that the Sedibeng District must bring its title back.

I am certain that by now you have evaluated what need to be in order to bring back the title. As we are about to award the achievers, we need to remind ourselves that there is still a long way to go. Your achievement means the beginning of the hard work ahead.

This may have a two-pronged meaning. Internally, this means that the support system is now concentrated to the Class of 2017. Learners have to learn and teachers have to teach. Unfortunately, in the late 2016 our area was engulfed by gangsterism which seemed to have alarmed our society and their respective cultures.

We cannot allow that to take place this year as well. Education must come first and this must be inculcated in the minds of our children. They must know that with education – they can make rational decisions that may bring necessary developments in the communities.

Externally, the top achievers are now beginning another phase of their lives. This phase needs all of you to be highly responsible and accountable to yourself. Only you can actualize your dream. The Emfuleni Local Municipality will forever support hard work and I wish all of you prosperous future endeavors.

I thank you.

Our Vision: A developmental municipality that continuously improves the quality of life of its residents. Emfuleni Local Municipality (previously Lekoa) is one of three Local Municipalities comprising the Sedibeng District Municipality situated in Vanderbijlpark, Gauteng, South Africa.
