The Acceptance Speech by the Executive Mayor, Councillor Greta Nomthandazo Hlongwane at the Council meeting held on 26 May 2011 at Vereeniging City Hall

Hounarable Speaker, let me first start by congratulating you on your appointment to this esteemed position as the Chair and Speaker of our Council. Let me warn you in advance, that sometimes old habits die hard!  Don’t be surprised if sometimes you will be called “Madam” Speaker! I will also not be surprised if the Executive Mayor is also sometimes called “Madam” Speaker!  Congratulations and best wishes.

By the same token let me also congratulate the Chief Whip of Council on his appointment. Congratulations!

Congratulations are also in order for all political parties represented in Council on their excellent participation and achievement during the elections.   In particular, let me single out the African National Congress for their splendid performance in these elections.

I also wish to express my gratitude, on behalf of Emfuleni Local Municipality, to all residents of Emfuleni for their participation in these elections for the benefit of strengthening our hard earned democratic dispensation in our beloved country, the Republic of South Africa.

Honourable Speaker, I accept my election as Executive Mayor of the Emfuleni Local Municipality, with humility and commitment to serve the entire community of Emfuleni with dedication and respect to the enormous responsibility placed upon me.

By the same token I wish to express my gratitude to the membership and leadership of the ruling party, in placing their trust in my ability to lead the Executive Collective of the Emfuleni Local Municipality.

In this context, I extend the same gratitude and revolutionary salute to the leadership collective of the revolutionary alliance,  that pledged their collective support for my nomination as the Executive Mayor elect and now the Executive Mayor.

Above all, Honourable Speaker, allow me to thank the Almighty for his blessings and pray for His continued blessing and guidance during my tenure and my executive collective.

Today, it is not a day for speeches but it is for me to only pronounce on my acceptance and to announce the leadership collective that is deployed to serve with me in the Mayoral Committee.

I am advised, Honourable Speaker, that a formal Mayoral Inauguration Ceremony, will be held next week on the 03rd June 2011, where the Executive Mayor will be expected to deliver her inaugural speech. I intend to respect this advise and to honour the invitation to the Mayoral Inauguration Ceremony.

Speaker, as I announce the deployees to the Mayoral Committee, allow me to pay homage to our outgoing Executive Mayor, Cllr Assistance Sithole Mshudulu and his Mayoral Committee for the outstanding leadership provided to the Council and residents of Emfuleni Local Municipality.
We assure you of our appreciation for the sterling work performed with commitment and dedication and our commitment to build on the firm foundation that you have laid for us!

The same gratitude is extended to the PMT, our outgoing Councillors, as well as the outstanding leadership of our outgoing Chief Whip of Council, Cllr Thembile Nquba and the whippery.

Speaker, Honourable Councillors and esteemed guests and residents of Emfuleni Local Municipality, allow me now to announce the composition of our Mayoral Committee as follows:

  • MMC: LED and Development Planning - Cllr Khulu Malindi
  • MMC: Housing – Cllr Manana Khubeka
  • MMC: Sports, Recreation, Arts and Culture – Cllr Chaka Radebe
  • MMC: Waste Management – Cllr Vuyelwa Godoli
  • MMC: Public Safety – Cllr Velaphi Mcera

Honourable Speaker, I do not have much to say to our Mayoral Committee, other than to remind them of the directive from the State President, His Excellency, President Jacob Zuma:

“Our goal is clear.  We want to have a country where millions more South Africans have decent employment opportunities, which has modern infrastructure and a vibrant economy and where the quality of life is high. We all have a responsibility to work hard to make this a reality!”

Last but not least, I wish to thank my family for their support to date, and I say to them: I thank you from the bottom of my heart for all  your sacrifices and assure you I will need your support even more in this new and challenging journey!
