Emfuleni Local Municipality enforces water restrictions

07 September 2016 - Water levels at the Vaal Dam are at an all-time low and municipalities across the country have been advised to enforce water restrictions. In compliance with a directive issued by the Honourable Minister of Water and Sanitation, Nomvula Mokonyane, Emfuleni Local Municipality will be enforcing water restrictions and all households are hereby advised to conserve water.

Rand Water will scale down water consumption by 15% in the Vaal Catchment Area as the Vaal Dam is close to 30%. This was last done in the Emfuleni Local Municipality area more than 18 years ago. The situation is not critical as yet, but Rand Water have already reduced water flow by 5% on Tuesday, another 5% reduction is scheduled for Thursday and then another 5% next Monday.

Council resolves to reduce grave tariffs

06 September 2016 - Let me announce that our 85th Council Sitting, held last Wednesday in Council Chambers, at our Head Offices in Vanderbijlpark resolved that our grave tariffs are going to be reduced. In other words, we have responded to the concerns and cries of our people who complained about our tariffs.

Throughout his engagements with the leadership of this municipality and sectors of our community affected by the cost of our graves, Executive Mayor Mahole Mofokeng and his team have conceded that our grave tariffs are unreasonably high. This was after they had a look at the research provided by the Municipal Manager and his team, which showed that indeed our tariffs were higher than other municipalities which have the same economic profile as Emfuleni Local Municipality.

Limiting the use of water in terms of SCHEDULE 3 ITEM 6 of the NATIONAL WATER ACT of 1998

05 September 2016 - The National Department of Water Affairs has issued out a directive to different municipalities to reduce the use of water. This instruction came through Rand Water for 15% reduction. Rand Water itself will start by reducing the municipality’s (ELM) main supply points immediately.

The areas serviced by low level reservoir may not be affected negatively as reservoir level may not drop immediately. However, water flow shall be lower than normal pressures especially during peak times. During these periods (peak times) the areas serviced by high level Reservoirs, will experience very low pressures in some areas. ELM remains concerned about areas where the pressure level drops to a ‘no flow’ level.
