Media Statement: Electricity and water cut-offs

11 August 2017 - We have noted Eskom notices and media reports made to disconnect the municipality (ELM) as of the 3 October 2017, meaning the area will be without electricity for some other times as stipulated.

This has sent panic to all the residents, in particular to the businesses and those that are paying promptly their municipal accounts. However, the municipality wishes to clarify the following facts: That indeed, it has fallen behind in respect of accounts payment of both RAND WATER AND ESKOM due to non- payment of services by the residence. These debts are however historical in nature, and the municipality has been navigating to settle these arrears for the bulk services, being Water and Electricity since June and July.

17 July 2017 - On Tuesday 18 July 2017 - The Executive Mayor of the Emfuleni Local Municipality Councillor Mahole Simon Mofokeng, Speaker and the Chief Whip supported by the Members of Mayoral Committee will lead the Municipality’s employees as they give 67 minutes of their time in support of international Mandela Day.

Members of the media are invited give coverage to the Emfuleni Local Municipality Mandela Day program. This year activities will happen at the following different places within Emfuleni Local Municipality.

Media Release: Water Reduction

23 June 2017 - Communities of Emfuleni Local Municipality are advised that Rand Water has gain reduced water pressure by 20% as from today.

This is as the result of the municipality being unable to fulfil its promise of paying the R70 million. Arrangement has been made to pay R15 million today but unfortunately the 20% will remain in force until the municipality pays the agreed instalment with Rand Water.  Read more...

15 May 2017 - Pensioner delighted to move from a shack in Tshepiso to a new house in Savanna City

After years living in a shack, Selinah Mahlasela finally sleeps in the comfort of her own home. During a rainy Saturday morning, the 100-year old Gogo from Tshepiso near Sharpeville became the recipient of a brand new house in Savanna City in the Midvaal Local Municipality.

MEDIA RESPONSE: Response from the Emfuleni Local Municipality regarding the expenditure of the Executive Mayor

18 May 2017 - It is common-cause that expenditure associated with the Office of the Executive Mayor is expended within the domain of the Executive Mayor’s duties as a functionary within the executive office. Further hereto, expenditure associated with executive offices is not unique or limited to the Emfuleni Local Municipality and is normally expended under expenses pertaining to entertainment, stakeholders’ engagements, business meetings and investor engagements in the execution of his official functions.

The Office of the Executive Mayor is not only responsible for programs of the Executive Mayor but also for those of the Mayoral Committee and the Municipal Manager. It must also be noted that part of the figures in question are over a period of five years and a not a single year as it has been reported in the media.

MEDIA STATEMENT: Emfuleni Municipal Manager officially resigns

28 March 2017 - The Emfuleni Local Municipality confirms the departure of the Municipal Manager, Yunus Chamda effectively as at 31 March 2017. The Municipal Manager has cited ‘personal reasons’ for his resignation which follows 22 years of serving in Local Government. The Municipality wishes Mr Chamda well in his future endeavours.

In his parting message Mr Chamda conveyed his thanks and appreciation to Executive Mayor Mofokeng in particular, and to the rest of the Council and staff of Emfuleni. He wishes to emphasise that his departure is on amicable terms, and not by virtue of any break down in his working relationship with the Executive Mayor or any of the Councillors, political parties or fellow officials.
