07 September 2016 - Water levels at the Vaal Dam are at an all-time low and municipalities across the country have been advised to enforce water restrictions. In compliance with a directive issued by the Honourable Minister of Water and Sanitation, Nomvula Mokonyane, Emfuleni Local Municipality will be enforcing water restrictions and all households are hereby advised to conserve water.
Rand Water will scale down water consumption by 15% in the Vaal Catchment Area as the Vaal Dam is close to 30%. This was last done in the Emfuleni Local Municipality area more than 18 years ago. The situation is not critical as yet, but Rand Water have already reduced water flow by 5% on Tuesday, another 5% reduction is scheduled for Thursday and then another 5% next Monday.
It appears that this 5% flow reduction has already affected our areas feeding directly from Rand Water that usually have lower pressure in water supply.
Residents are therefore advised to save water in their households and the following restrictions have been put in place by the municipality:
- No watering gardens between 6am to 6pm. After 6pm you can water your garden but only with a hose;
- Washing of cars only allowed from a bucket or container - no hosepipes;
- Swimming pools can only be filled from a bore hole and not municipal supply,
The municipality is pleading with residents to abide by these restrictions. We will also have to look into addressing water leaks in the Evaton/Sebokeng Area as the biggest consumers of water.
