The Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) through the Office of the Speaker of Council: Cllr. Maipato Tsokolibane in partnership with the Gauteng Department of Corporative Governance & Traditional Affairs will be hosting an induction workshop for the newly elected Ward Committee members as follows:

Regarded as one of the important pillars of Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM), ward committees are the foot soldiers and faces of service delivery for our people. Ward committees are established to ensure active citizenry, ensure public and community participation, making sure that council is aware of the needs and concerns of its residents. This induction programme aims to interalia do the following:
- Clarify roles of Ward Committee Members and the roles of the Speaker of Council, CDWs, Ward & PR Councillors,
- Provide perspective on functioning of government with specific focus on local government,
- Map out the Municipal & Gauteng City Region Vision and
- Establish the SWOT analysis for different wards.
All newly elected members will be sworn in office through signing of a pledge, an oath committing themselves to certain commitments during their reign of five years. Corresponding directly with the term of the new Emfuleni Council, the ward committee members are expected to not only monitor municipal administration but to oversee provision of services to the community of Emfuleni.
The elections of the Ward Committee members were successfully conducted after the local government elections which took place on the 3rd August 2016. Between September 2016 and February 2017, the office of the Speaker of Council worked effortlessly to ensure all forty-five (45) wards constituting the Emfuleni Local Municipality covered in the ward committee elections.
Four hundred & fifty (450) newly elected Ward Committee members, all Councillors of the Emfuleni Local Municipality, Community Development Workers (CDWs), Representatives from Gauteng Department of Corporative Governance & Traditional Affairs and South African Local Government Association (SALGA) are expected to attend this workshop.
