MUNICIPALITY COMPLETES THE REPLACEMENT OF GRAVITY SEWER LINE

Residents of Unitas Park, ward 45 in Emfuleni, welcomed the launch of an upgraded sewer pipeline. The acting Executive Mayor, Jonas Radebe presented the latest infrastructure development on 27 June 2024.  The implemented gravity sewer line is approximately 4700m in length and is expected to benefit 3593 households.  Population growth and ageing infrastructure combined are the major challenges that affect the municipality’s sanitation standards.

The municipality started working on this project in 2021, comprising two phases. Lettam Building and Civils, NKP Consultants and Alsandro Construction were appointed to render engineering services including design, project management and construction of gravity sewer line from Houtkop and Unitas park north of Leeuwkuil wastewater treatment works to pump station 3D in Vereeniging located along the Houtkop road in Unitas Park.

Just over fifty people were employed on phase one and two of this project, thirty-two and nineteen respectively. A total of thirteen local SMME’S were amongst others appointed for provision of various services including security, supply of ablution facilities, pipe installations, manholes installations and diesel supply. Seven locals were provided training on construction.

“It was a successful project, and I should mention that in phase two the project was scheduled for twelve months and actually took six months,” says Owen Mulaudzi Manger of IPAM at Emfuleni. His department among other things sourced the seven locals for training during phase two of this project in order to provide skills, thus opening up employment opportunities for the local community members.
