Mass Prayer for the youth

22 June 2011 - Programme - The impact and negative Influence of lack of employment, substance abuse, environmental pressure and peer pressure are becoming more visible in the self destructive behavior displayed by young people lately. This has also let to the escalation of crime rate.

These challenges have prompted the community of Sebokeng, particularly women, to organize themselves to conduct a mass prayer for the youth. After their interaction on a number of occasions, the group then extended an invitation to Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) as the closest government institution to the community. Following several meetings, the two parties (ELM and Sebokeng community) agreed on a formation of a partnership to advance the initiative. It was then decided that other stakeholders, which includes, churches, Social Development, Correctional Services, SA Police Services, NGOs, Youth, GDE and labour movements, be invited to be part of the Mass Prayer. And they all accepted the invitation.

Tomorrow, the parties will hold a joint mass prayer at a number of venues around Emfuleni. The prayers’ main objective is to decrease teenage substance abuse, reduce crime and create awareness on parental care obligation. The main event will be held at Mphatlalatsane Hall in Sebokeng from 09h00 until 12h00 on Thursday 23 June 2011.

Members of the media are invited to attend and give coverage to the event.
