Emfuleni Local Municipality workers roll up sleeves to do good on Mandela Day
12 July 2011 - The Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) will on Monday 18 July join the rest of the world in an international campaign for Mandela Day. The Day will give South Africans and the international community an opportunity to do something good to help others in recognition of Mandela’s decades of sacrifice for humanity. The Campaign has been initiated by the Nelson Mandela Foundation and related organisations. The day is also a birthday celebration of our Former President Nelson Mandela as he will be turning 92 on the day.
Through a series of activities or projects planned for the day, the Emfuleni Local Municipality, led by the Executive Mayor Councillor Greta Hlongwane and members of the Emfuleni Senior Management Team, will bring together both its employees and the public in celebrating Mandela Day.
These activities will be spread across the municipal area in an attempt to touch all corners of our communities. The Monday programme is part of the Municipality’s commitment in response to President Jacob Zuma’s call that on the 18th of July we should commemorate Mandela Day through community programmes that will concretely improve the lives of our people.
The ELM would like to call on community members to be part of this historic day and join the municipality’s employees as they give 67 minutes of their time to make an imprint and help change the world around them for the better.
The Municipality will be engaged in the following activities:
- Cleaning of a sports field in Tshepiso Extension 3
- Erecting an AIDS wall at the Rustervaal intersection on the old Johannesburg road
- Handing over of an RDP house to Gogo Lettia Mthimkulu
- Upgrading and beautification of Naledi Nkanyezi Day Care Centre in Zone 13 Sebokeng
- Launch of a mobile clinic in Boiketlong
In this regard, the ELM would also want to urge community leaders to take the lead and mobilise members of the community to ensure that the Day reflects Nelson Mandela’s values and his example of dedication to the service of humanity.
