Emfuleni Municipality to hold an agricultural summit
06 December 2012 - The Emfuleni Local Municipality is one of the Municipalities around the country that are plagued by unacceptable levels of structural unemployment and poverty.
Economic growth has in the recent years been slow. This situation has led to job creation and poverty alleviation being identified as Emfuleni’s top priorities.
In order to address these challenges, agriculture was identified as one of the high impact sectors which can build on and complement initiatives of the growth development strategy of the region. After extensive research and engagements, the Emfuleni Local Municipality took a decision to bring together stakeholders in the agricultural sector to deliberate on the draft strategy on agricultural support.
This will be done in a form of an Agricultural Summit which will be held under the theme “Unlocking the agricultural value chain and networks to secure a bright future for Emfuleni”. Areas of debate will include the following:
- Successes and challenges in the urban agriculture projects
- Access to land and finance
- Infrastructure
- Water resource management and development
- Development of farmers HIV and AIDS strategy and support programme
- Establishment of a youth agricultural programme
