Emfuleni to launch vegetable farming project

06 August 2014 - As part of Emfuleni Local Municipality’s initiative to reduce poverty levels within communities in the area, the Municipality will be launching a vegetable farming project tomorrow.

This Mayoral Food Resilience Initiative will be launched by the Executive Mayor Councillor Greta Hlongwane in partnership with Red Ants Security, Relocation and Eviction Services (PTY) LTD.

The programme will be implemented through the Red Farms, a broad based cooperative business and social food security project. As part of the programme, Red Farms will collaborate with the Municipality to train emerging farm workers, the youth, as well as veteran farmers from various walks of life to provide them with agricultural skills.

This Food Security Project has been piloted successfully by the same company in the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality as well as the City of Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality, led by Executive Mayor Parks Tau and Mondli Gungubele respectively, where mayoral food parcels were distributed to the needy.

The other objectives of this Mayoral Food Resilience Initiative are, among others, to

  • To train, mentor and empower emerging farmers;
  • To help provide crop farming opportunities in Emfuleni;
  • To develop entrepreneurial skills to local emerging farmers,
  • To expose emerging farmers to local fresh produce markets,
  • To boost the economy of Emfuleni through vegetable farming and
  • To empower citizens about the cooperative business principles.
