Media Statement: Emfuleni Local Municipality Executive Mayor, Councillor Mahole Simon Mofokeng surprises new mothers with gifts

02 January 2016 - Executive Mayor Councillor Mahole Simon Mofokeng and his entire Mayoral Committee surprised mothers whose bundles of joy were born on Christmas Day [December 25th 2106] and New Year’s Day [January 1st 2017] with gifts.

Councillor Mofokeng and his team visited several maternity wards at different medical facilities including Kopanong Hospital in Vereeniging, Johan Heyns Community Health Centre in Vanderbijlpark and the Levai Mbatha CHC in Evaton. This was part of an annual two-day programme championed by Mayor Mofokeng and aimed at welcoming toddlers born on days of significance, as part of the municipality’s social responsibility programme.

Mayor Mofokeng told the mothers to look after their children and encouraged the excited women to make use of local clinics and hospitals to ensure their newborns stay healthy. “You have a great responsibility of looking after these children.
We congratulate all of you who have been blessed with beautiful children,” he said.

Mayor Mofokeng was also accompanied by the municipality’s Chief Whip, Councillor Christina Sale and members of his political office at the Emfuleni Local Municipality.
The Executive Mayor gave the mothers starter packages which included nappies, wipes, baby lotions and many other necessities – all packed in big baby bathtubs.

Ida Zondo (33) from Small Farm is one of the mothers who gave birth at the Sebokeng hospital on New Year’s Day. “I’m very happy, I’ve named my baby boy Bokang,” she said. She also thanked Mayor Mofokeng and his team for thinking about mothers on the first day of the year.

“I would to thank the Executive Mayor for this beautiful surprise.
Life will be easier and as I now the baby’s basic necessities.
January is a difficult month and no matter how much you plan ahead, there is always something the baby needs and that is the reason why I’m so grateful to the Mayor and everyone who came to see us,” she said.

Over 30 mothers who gave birth to Christmas Day and New Year’s Day babies at different medial facilities received gift packs.
They include Puleng Thinane (25) from Evaton Central, Olga Johnny (33) and Lerato Makondo (21) both from Evaton West – who all gave birth to Christmas Babies at the Levai Mbatha Community Health Center.
