Vaal River floods update

2 February 2010 - Two more Vaal Dam sluice gates were closed this morning following a decrease in the water inflow into the dam. This brings the number of closed gates to four since last week Friday. This has led to a decrease in the water flow into the Vaal River. Two more gates are expected to be closed this afternoon.

Despite the decrease, the Emfuleni Local Municipality’s Water Rescue team will remain on standby until the situation normalizes.

Two of the roads which were closed due to flooding in Three Rivers since last week, have been opened. The Brandmuller road is clear of all water. Both lanes of the General Hertzog road have also been opened. The water on the Golf road is decreasing and hopefully the road will be opened by tomorrow or Thursday.

As the Emfuleni Local Municipality, we would like to assure our communities that our joint operation committee will continue to be on high alert to provide the necessary services should the need arise. Members of the public are advised to report any incident to the Sedibeng Call Centre on 10177. We also appeal to residents around the lower situated establishments not to panic but to be on high alert.
