Vaal River floods update

3 February 2010 - Another Vaal Dam sluice gate has been closed following a dramatic decrease in the water inflow into the dam. This brings the number of closed gates to seven since last week Friday. Four were closed yesterday. The Vaal Dam is now 103-percent full, which is six-percent less than the weekend level. This is attributed to the water inflow which has been on a decrease since Friday last week.

The water inflow into the Dam is now standing at 388-thousand litres per second. The flow has decreased by 612-thousand litres per second since Monday (01/02/10). The outflow is currently standing at 940-thousand litres per second which is almost a million litres less than the weekend flow.

All roads have been opened except for the Golf Road at the bridge where the road crosses the Klip River. The road will remain closed until further notice. Our engineers are preparing to conduct tests on the bridge structure to ensure that it is still intact.

The current situation means that the water is gradually stabilizing. However, the Emfuleni Local Municipality’s emergency services will remain on high alert to provide the necessary services should the need arise.
