The launch is part of the premier commitment to alleviate the plight of rural areas, and revitalization of agriculture as a viable sector of the Gauteng economy as highlighted in the recently launched Employment, Growth Development strategy.

In his welcoming speech, the Executive Mayor of the District, Clr Mahole Mofokeng indicated that cooperatives have always been around in the form of Letsema/Ilima. “It is such collective efforts that produced prudent African farmers and ensured that there is food security” he said.

The Maize Triangle Project aims to provide support and build capacity amongst farmers. It aims to ensure that there is food security for the province through the development of program targeting the maize triangle area namely Sedibeng, Metsweding and East Rand.

The launch took place at Holfontien farm measuring seven thousands hectors. The land is a hive of farming activity under the cooperatives members, in farming activities such as poultry and maize. The farmers received brand new twelve Holland's tractors, fertilizers and farming irrigation equipments. These twelve tractors are to be shared between three regions Sedibeng, Metsweding and West Rand Gauteng maize triangle.

The cooperatives employ 400 farm workers and 8000 seasonal farm workers around the Sedibeng.  Every member is entitled to 200 hectares of land. Many speakers encouraged members to diversify into agro-processing, animal husbandry, green energy, horticulture and agri-tourism.

Premier Mokonyane said “We must use farming to  unite both black and white farming communities to stand together in confronting challenges facing them like the farm killings and stock theft raised by Holfontien chairperson. There is nothing to achieve without serious commitment, and farmers must market their products.  She went further asking in IsiZulu “Uzoyi thola kanjani uhlezi  ekhoneni , kuyasheshwa.

With hard work the farmers will be able to raise the Gauteng profile in the agricultural sector added premier Nomvula Mokonyane. Mokonyane cautioned farmers against the tendency of buying expensive cars, some relocating to affluent areas such as Three Rivers and run farms with cell phone before the project register any success. These are the ingredients of disaster to happen with the project despite any government effort in supporting farmers.

This launch is part Gauteng government strategy to reclaim its historic role as part of the South African maize belt.  “Tlala e mo kotsing” declared Mokonyane as she addresses the multitudes of stakeholders present.
